The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp
Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp was created with a simple but powerful premise: that children with serious illnesses deserve the transformational joy, friendship, and belonging that define the camp experience. For nearly four decades, the organization has delivered life-changing programs, always free of charge, to thousands of children and families each year. Rooted in compassion, resilience, safety, and joyful inclusion, the Camp blends traditional activities with significant, yet unobtrusive, medical support so that every child can safely participate, stretch beyond perceived limitations, and discover a community defined by acceptance.
From its original Connecticut campus in Ashford to hospital partnerships across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, Hole in the Wall has evolved into a multi-site, year-round enterprise. Programs include onsite summer sessions, Family Weekends, bereavement retreats, the Hero’s Journey® and Champion’s Journey adventures, a robust Hospital Outreach Program serving nearly 40 locations, and Family Outreach initiatives that extend the Camp’s magic into homes and communities. In 2026, the organization will open its Maryland campus on the historic Wye River property, marking a significant expansion of its national reach and impact.
The Opportunity
The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp seeks a bold, mission-driven Chief Executive Officer to lead one of the nation’s most beloved organizations serving children with serious illnesses and their families.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO serves as chief strategist, enterprise leader, and mission steward, ensuring alignment across programs, people, culture, and resources while advancing long-term sustainability and impact. This is a defining moment in the organization’s history, as the next CEO will steward both the continued strength of the Connecticut campus and the successful launch and growth of the Maryland campus.
The CEO will guide a complex, multi-site enterprise that includes onsite and year-round programming, hospital-based outreach, and regional family engagement across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. As the organization’s most visible ambassador, the CEO will expand national awareness, strengthen partnerships with hospitals and community organizations, and help lead a transformational $150 million comprehensive campaign. Internally, the CEO will assess and strengthen organizational structure, including the recruitment of a Chief Operating Officer, while fostering a culture rooted in compassion, excellence, safety, and joy.
This leader will shape the next chapter of Hole in the Wall’s impact, ensuring that its founding spirit endures while evolving to meet emerging needs.
