Chief Development Officer

Boston Medical Center

Boston, Massachusetts

Lindauer was honored to bring this search to a successful conclusion in partnership with Boston Medical Center. Read the announcement about Susie Posner-Jones becoming BMC’s next Chief Development Officer.

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a private, nonprofit medical center situated in Boston’s historic South End. This prominent institution is also the principal teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine, hosting numerous residents and fellows in various training programs and conducting groundbreaking medical research. BMC offers services across 70 medical specialties and subspecialties, conducting over one million patient visits annually, and is a critical lifeline for the community in times of medical emergencies.

With a rich history dating back to 1864, BMC is dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare without regard to a patient’s ability to pay. Nearly 75% of BMC’s patients come from underserved populations who rely on government payers for their healthcare coverage. The medical center offers a wide range of specialized care, serving as New England’s busiest trauma and emergency services center. BMC’s commitment to equity and inclusion is widely recognized, as it has received accolades for its clinical expertise and its pioneering efforts in health equity, social justice, and green initiatives.

The Opportunity

BMC is seeking a Chief Development Officer (CDO) who will play a pivotal role within BMC’s leadership team, crafting a bold new vision to elevate BMC’s philanthropic profile and overseeing all fundraising activities for the Medical Center. The primary focus of the role is to develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes soliciting annual, major, and principal donors; securing corporate philanthropic support; and managing special events.

True to BMC’s legacy of inclusive healthcare, the CDO is responsible for cultivating transformational gifts and advancing BMC’s commitment to racial equity both internally and externally. They will lead the development team and work to foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization.

The ideal candidate should have extensive fundraising experience, a strong commitment to social justice and equity, and a proven track record of leading and mentoring a high-performing development team. They should have a deep understanding of healthcare intricacies and the ability to lead in a matrixed organizational structure while fostering cross-functional team collaboration. The CDO will also collaborate with BMC’s medical and administrative staff, serve on leadership teams, and ensure effective donor engagement and stewardship.

This role is integral to BMC’s mission to ensure exceptional healthcare for all, regardless of their ability to pay, by securing the necessary financial support to sustain and expand BMC’s critical services.
