Executive Director, Development Planning and Initiatives

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Cambridge, Massachusetts

Established in 1861, MIT is recognized as one of the world’s leading academic institutions, with a mission to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. The philanthropic generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations has been a key element in MIT’s rise to world leadership in education and research.

The Opportunity

Following the recent successful completion of the $6.2 billion MIT Campaign for a Better World, the Office of Resource Development seeks an Executive Director, Development Planning and Initiatives to lead and transition the focus of the campaign office onto a new set of post-campaign activities. A newly created role, the ED will serve as a member of Resource Development’s senior management team and will be integral to fostering collaborative relationships across the Institute — including with the Chancellor, Chair of the MIT Corporation, and the Corporation Development Committee — to ensure consistency, priority alignment, and execution of MIT’s fundraising efforts.

The ability to read and comprehend data is key to this role as the ED will be charged with conducting a post-campaign analysis to refine fundraising and stewardship strategies at MIT, as well as tracking, analyzing, and reporting progress on select Institution-wide initiatives. The ideal candidate will also have a deep understanding of fundraising best practices, prior campaign experience, and a knack for translating complex academic and institutional priorities, often scientific in nature, into discrete funding opportunities that will excite and inspire MIT’s donors and prospects.
